End Garment

After working on the garment for the past few days, I finished it all off this morning. One of my classmates asked if she could take pictures of the garment for her portfolio. I went down to the studio with her and another classmate who kindly modelled it for me. The results were brilliant.  Photos by Lauren Daly, Model is Joely Donald.

Garment Creation

I decided to make a large scale version of my fashion design ideas. I wanted to try making a top out of the torn up images. Today I worked on this and have completely finished the top, I hope to do a fashion shoot tomorrow of it, unfortunately this will not be a location shoot as i do not have time to visit the location, so they will be done in the studio at college. I hope at a later date that I will be able to take the outfit to the location and shoot there.
After making the top, I decided that instead of just putting some shorts that had been bought from the high street with it, I would create my own. I tried out a few different techniques for the fabric of the shorts. Here are just a few of the techniques I tried...

After doing these I decided on the bottom one as the pattern is interesting and complimented the top.

Garment Ideas

I started to work with my pieces of brusho, representing mould and growth. Tearing small pieces of different variations of brusho up, I stitched them together using free stitch and bright cotton to reflect the bright colours of the graffiti. I didnt like the bright nature of the piece which I had created, so decided to take inspiration from Mary Katrantzou and Jean Pierre Braganza. Using the monochrome colour scheme which had become apparent throughout my recent work, I printed off images of the power station in black and white. Using these I created a similar effect to the one I created with the brusho pieces and this was a lot more successful. Applying them to fashion designs I believe it could work really well as a full sized garment. Here are the images of my fashion ideas...

Mary Katrantzou

Another designer discovered from research into this months London Fashion Week is Mary Katrantzou. Her designs include strong imagery within the garments. The images and close ups make up the pattern of the fabrics. Many of the garments from her AW 2013 collection are monochrome with only subtle hints of other colours and this is what I am working towards. Her simple edgy designs are very futuristic, using bold and daring shapes she has created a collection to aspire to. I am taking inspiration from the images she uses within her designs to create my own garment, with only some bright colour.

Inspiration from London Fashion Week

So after sadly missing London Fashion Week I have researched some of the artists that attended and did catwalks.
The first designer I have looked at and who will influence my later work is Jean Pierre Braganza. His AW 2013 collection, reflects the use of photographs and digital imagery that I have used throughout my work. He uses structured and simple shapes, with simple prints. A particular favourite of the show was the dress below. Jean Pierre has used a black and white colour scheme throughout this collection with highlights of colour. I aspire to create something with influence from his collection. Conducting further research I have discovered that his Spring/Summer 2013 collection used geometric shapes and the same black and white theme, it reminds me of the black and white dress that I previously made.

Display of my work

As my work was being moderated, I was asked to set up a display of my work. It was definitely good experience and good practice for the future. My folder containing sketchbooks was out on display and then a few pieces were up on the walls. I selected the garment that I wanted to display, so I choose the black and white one as I believe this to be my strongest piece. I have a few images of my display...

Garment Experimentation

I wanted to create a garment with the 'mould' fabric from earlier and decided to make a long skirt with it. I have used the free stitch and let the threads hang down. Professional pictures to come...

Wire Dress

One of my favourite designs that I created for the Bath Spa mini project was the all wire dress. I was really interested in actually creating this garment full scale. As the dress fitted with my current theme, I took the decision to make it. It took a while to think about how I was actually going to make it, I didnt want to actually weld the dress and wanted it to be very structured. By bending and shaping the wire, I have managed to make a very structured design. I like the outcome and think it will show it off more when I take location photos of it, but for now here is what it looks like (promise it will look better when worn)

Happy accidents GARMENT CREATION

So, when I was creating my cut out image of the power station, I spray glued it. It just happened that the rough card that I used to put behind the image when spray gluing, was black. The spray glue stencilled the cut out part of the image onto the card. From this accident, I came up with a really interesting idea.
Originally I was going to use white spray paint onto black fabric. After spending ages cutting out my stencil, the spray paint bled onto the fabric and didnt work at all, this meant I had to think of a different way of creating a similar effect. Cutting out a new stencil, this time I sponge printed white paint onto the black fabric.  This worked really well. My first idea was to use the 'mould' fabric in my previous post for the top of the dress, but I then changed my mind and thought it would look better if I used the stencil on white fabric and printed in black. The final dress has turned out really well and I am so happy with the result. I plan on taking professional photos of this, but this is just to show you for now.

More work on derelict buildings

These images that I have created have been made by using paper cutting, I cut blocks out of the top images and placed a colour copy of the same building but from a different angle underneath. I have then sewn into the images highlighting key aspects and adding the natural growth which was visible all over the building. I like the idea that the moss and trees are growing out of the building. Using Rachel Grant as inspiration has created an interesting idea. Her work also uses buildings, she has used free stitch to highlight key areas. Also she has included other images within her work, similar to that of mine. The piece that I have created uses brusho in the background to represent the moss and mould on the walls. I dont think this was as successful as my other ones, but it is still interesting. Working with this series of photographs and free stitch I plan on creating a garment.

Samples and ideas- derelict buildings

I wanted to create an effect similar to mould, the look in the image below reminds me of the mould growing. I have used dyes to create this. I decided to then work into the fabric print created using free stitch. Trying bright blue thread to represent graffiti was unsuccessful in my mind and I dont like the design this creates. Slightly more successful was to use natural green and brown threads to sew more 'mould' patches, the threads were then left to hang down, similar to the work I did on pictures. I plan on using this on a garment.

Reem Alasadi

Looking at Reem Alasadi's work has inspired my lace skirt. She uses found objects to create garments, these can be both vintage and modern. I have used lace which was bought from a charity shop and draped it on a mannequin. I took greatinspiration from the 'thrown together' look of Alasadi's garments. She has also used a similar black and white colour scheme in a selection of her Twisted Oliver collection 2012.
Here are images from this collection below...
